Horticultural Oil

Organic

1. How it Works

This Horticultural Oil is made from canola oil. The oil acts as a suffocating film that covers the pests or their eggs, making it difficult for them to breathe, ultimately leading to their demise. Fertilome Horticultural Oil is highly refined, which means it has fewer impurities and is less likely to cause plant damage when used as directed.

The oil works by blocking the spiracles (breathing pores) of insects, effectively suffocating them. It is particularly effective against soft-bodied pests such as aphids, mites, and scale insects. Additionally, the oil can disrupt the life cycle of certain insects by preventing them from laying eggs or by smothering the eggs before they hatch.

2. Usage

Horticultural Oil is best used as a preventive treatment, although it can also be effective when pests are already present. It’s ideal for application during the dormant season to target over-wintering pests and their eggs. When using the oil, it’s essential to ensure thorough coverage of all plant parts, especially the undersides of leaves where pests often reside.

To enhance its effectiveness, it can be mixed with a surfactant to help the oil spread and adhere to the plant surfaces better. However, caution should be exercised as overuse or incorrect mixing ratios can harm the plants. As with most horticultural oils, it’s recommended to apply Horticultural Oil during cooler parts of the day or evening to avoid potential plant burn and to protect beneficial insects that are active during the day.

3. Targeting Specific Pests and Diseases

Horticultural Oil is effective against a variety of pests, including aphids, mites, scale insects, whiteflies, and more. It can also help in controlling certain fungal diseases like powdery mildew by creating a protective barrier on the plant’s surface, preventing fungal spores from germinating.

It’s also effective against certain fungus like Powdery Mildew.

The oil is especially potent against pests in their immature stages, such as larvae or nymphs. However, it can also have an impact on some adult pests. For best results, regular monitoring of plants and timely applications are crucial to keep pest populations under control and ensure healthy plant growth.

As with all pesticide products, it’s essential to read and follow label instructions to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Watering Tips

  • Our watering advice is based on plants living in a 72 degree house. Porch life or humidity could have an impact on its watering needs.
  • Always use tepid water for watering your houseplants.
  • Broadleaf plants need less water in fall and winter, but you should never allow the soil to completely dry out.
